OFORIKROM MCE URGES YOUTH TO EMBRACE AGRICULTURE FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Oforikrom, Hon. Abraham Antwi, has called upon the youth to seize the opportunities presented by the second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme.

Speaking at the 39th Edition of the National Farmers’ Day Celebration held at the Ayeduase School Park, Hon. Antwi emphasized the economic potential of agriculture and encouraged the youth to view it as a profitable venture.

Under the theme, “Delivering Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience,” Hon. Antwi highlighted the Municipality’s commitment to supporting local farmers. He revealed that the Assembly had entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Crop Research Institute to develop various varieties of onion seedlings, aimed at assisting farmers within the municipality.

Mr. Osei Kwame Kyeretwie, the Director of Agriculture, shared additional efforts to boost agriculture within the municipality. He announced the distribution of free coconut seedlings to farmers under the Planting for Export and Rural Development initiative, emphasizing its role in eradicating poverty and fostering agricultural development.

The prestigious Municipal Best Farmer award was presented to Mr. Benjamin Afrane for his outstanding contributions to food security. In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to the MCE and the Oforikrom Department of Agriculture for their consistent support.

Mr. Afrane highlighted concerns about the declining quality of agro-chemicals, noting that farmers are compelled to use their discretion due to the disparity between labeled directions and actual results. He called on the Standards Authority to investigate this issue, emphasizing the need to uphold quality standards in the agricultural sector.

In recognition of their exceptional performance and contributions to the country’s food security, a total of nine farmers in the Oforikrom Municipality were honored and awarded with various items, including TV sets, knapsack sprayers, machetes, Wellington boots, and other farming equipment.

The National Farmers’ Day Celebration served as a platform to acknowledge the vital role of farmers in sustaining the nation's food security and promoting resilient agricultural practices. The event concluded with a renewed commitment from local authorities to continue supporting and empowering farmers for the economic development of the Oforikrom Municipality.
