OFORIKROM PRIORITIZES DYSLEXIA AWARENESS ON CHILDREN’S DAY

The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly has marked the International Children’s Day with a forum held at the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E) Church yesterday, focusing on strengthening public awareness of dyslexia and neurodiversity within basic school classrooms.

Held under the theme, “Dyslexia and Neurodiversity: Understanding the Conditions in Our Classrooms,” the event brought together education authorities, health experts, Assembly representatives, teachers, parents and schoolchildren in a bid to promote early identification, inclusive learning and support systems for children with special learning needs.

The Municipal Education Director, Madam Dorothy Opare-Baidoo, who delivered the keynote address on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Anwel Ahmed Sadat, underscored the importance of this year’s theme, stressing the need for collective responsibility in supporting neurodiverse children.

Dr. Mrs. Gloria Amponsah-Kodua, a Pediatrician at Ejisu Government Hospital addressed the roles of parents, teachers and the education system in identifying and managing dyslexia. She highlighted available medical interventions and the significance of specialized schools. Dr. Amponsah-Kodua also appealed to the Municipal Education Office, corporate bodies and philanthropists to support initiatives targeting children with learning differences.

Special Education Officer, Mr. Kofi Amona gave the second presentation, addressing misconceptions surrounding dyslexia and outlining practical classroom support strategies. He stressed the importance of dispelling stigma and ensuring inclusive learning environments.

The Municipal Social Welfare Officer, Madam Mary Serwaa-Adjen, in the last presentation used a participatory demonstration to show how neglecting children with neurodiverse conditions affects not only the children themselves but also their families, communities and the nation. She emphasized that supporting such children is a shared societal obligation.

The well attended program gave participants the opportunity to engage with speakers through questions and discussions.
