OfMA DISTRIBUTES FREE COCONUT SEEDLINGS TO FARMERS
The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly through the Department Of Food and Agriculture has procured and taken delivery of 1000 coconut seedlings for onward distribution to farmers in the municipality on Tuesday, 5th September 2023.
The initiative under the Planting for Export and Rural Development is to boost cash crop production and export which ultimately translate into revenue generation
The Planting for Export and Rural Development is a decentralized national tree crop programme to promote rural economic growth and improve household incomes of farmers through the provision of certified improved seedlings
The Municipal Director of the Agric, Mr. Osei Kwame Kyeretwie stated that, the Assembly considered coconut under the initiative to be the most suitable cash crop after considering the weather conditions and the soil in the municipality.
He further highlighted the benefits of the initiative which included revenue generation through export and income for farmers.
“These coconut seedlings are expected to be harvested by three years after planting. And we look forward to boosting agriculture within the municipality as the produce will be exported to generate income”. He noted.
Presenting the seedlings to some farmers in the municipality, Mr. Osei Kwame Kyeretwie hinted that the department is expected to receive 4000 additional seedlings for onward distribution to farmers.
Farmers’ present showed great appreciation for the seedlings they received adding that, it would be of great benefit to them.
Also in attendance were the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Abraham Antwi, Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Charles Attah-Mensah, the Presiding Member, Hon. Richard Nyarko, Assembly Members and staff of the Agric Department of the Assembly.
