The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly through the Social Welfare and Community Development Unit has supported some persons living with disability in the municipality with various items to engage in income-generating activities which will help improve their socio-economic wellbeing.

A total of 65 items worth (GH¢82, 077, 11) were distributed. Items disbursed included; Deep Freezers, Fufu Pounding Machine, Knitting Machine, Hairdressing Equipment (Hair Dryer & Sink), Fruit Structure, Welding & Grinding Machine, Popcorn Machine And Equipment, Container, Stove With Oven, Carpentry Tools & Equipment, Start-Up Capitals, Medical Support, Educational Support, Apprenticeship fee, White canes and mobility training for the Blind Union.

The Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Abraham Antwi in his address stated that disability is not incapacitation, hence should a person for any reason be challenged, society ought to respect and help them to support themselves to be useful in society, hence the disability fund instituted by the government. He added that government through the fund will continue to give hope to people living with disability, however, the government cannot do it alone since the registered number of people keep increasing.

He thus made a passionate appeal to philanthropist, private people and NGO’s to partner with the assembly to provide other forms of support to augment what government is doing.

He called on the beneficiaries to make good use of the items in order to generate income to support themselves and their families.

The Presiding Member, Hon. Frank Frimpong who chaired the programme reiterated the MCE’s call to the general public on the need to respect the right and dignity of persons living with disability and treat them as such. He added that together all of us can integrate persons who are challenged in any way into society by providing the love and care we all expect from each other.

In attendance were the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Charles Attah-Mensah, Assembly members, Heads of Departments, some Political Party Executives and Persons Living with Disability as well as beneficiaries.
